Mariyam is a researcher and writer, currently based in Hong Kong. Her writing is inspired by cultural and religious influences on women’s lives in Indian middle-class families. Over the past year, she has written on familial care-giving, parental-societal expectations, and acceptance of grief. Her articles have appeared in Livemint and Hindustan Times.
Mariyam is a journalist by training, and recently finished researching for former Financial Times Mumbai Bureau Chief, James Crabtree’s book, The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India’s New Gilded Age.
A keen interviewer, she continues to meet and bring out stories of women making a mark by challenging societal expectations. Her journalistic interests lie in : politico-cultural identity of Muslim women, civil rights in India, and challenges to women’s healthcare in Asian countries.
Mariyam holds a Master in Public Policy from the National University of Singapore, and a Bachelors in Journalism from the University of Delhi.
